Located right across the border in Playas de Tijuanas, ‘El Yogurt Place’ has been a well-loved establishment since 1976. Priding themselves in delivering healthy delicious food, there is an English menu with descriptions that caters to children, vegetarians and even non-breakfast lovers alike.
We love our Chilaquiles (/ˌCHēləˈkēlās/) and you can choose between a green or a red sauce. Chilaquiles are cut up fried pieces of corn tortilla served with a mole or salsa. In this picture you see green chilaquiles topped with a couple of eggs, pulled chicken, avocado, crema, queso fresco and lettuce. This particular item has a *star on the menu which means you get fresh squeezed orange or grapefruit juice, coffee or substitute AND a choice of a side dish Nopalitos (stir fried cactus), potatoes, beans or avocado all under $7 for a dish that could have easily been shared.
We like starting off our tour here and make reservations ahead of time as this is a very popular and busy restaurant. Even with a slight wait, attached to ‘El Yogurt Place’ is a health foods market where you can peruse all kinds of dried fruits, nuts and other healthy cooking supplies as well as their house pumpkin jam that they serve along with toast and butter.
Right outside of ‘El Yogurt Place’ is a little shop where you can pick up souvenirs on your way out.
‘El Yogurt Place’ is a classic establishment that makes it hard to pass Tijuana without dropping by. It is our highly recommended first stop on the tour as it exemplifies Mexico’s homestyle cuisine and hospitality setting the mood for the day ahead.
